Jenkins was born and raised in Chatham, Ontario, the only child of Delores Jackson and Ferguson Jenkins Sr. His father, a chef and chauffeur, was the son of immigrants from Barbados, while his mother was a descendant of American slaves who escaped through the Underground Railroad before settling in Southwestern Ontario. Cindy had known nothing about it, and it angered her. Three years later, at the end of the 1965 season, he was called up to the Phillies, as a relief pitcher. "Sheriff Powell!" Ferguson Jenkins was the perfect pitcher. Over 19 baseball seasons, the three-time All-Star finished with a record of 284 wins and 226 losses, despite pitching at home in some of baseballs hitters ball-parks, including Wrigley Field in Chicago and Fenway Park in Boston.
